A healthy diet is a long-term investment to good lung health and a better lifestyle.

Recommended Diet for healthy Lungs

  • Water : Water is essential for healthy lungs. Dry lungs are prone to irritation. So, keep yourself well hydrated.
  • Fruits and Vegetables : Citrus fruits, like orange and lemon, are rich source of antioxidants and Vitamin C which in turn, helps in boosting the immunity and fighting against respiratory infections. Also, vegetables like red cabbage rich source of anthocyanins which improves lung functioning.
  • High Proteins: Keeps your lungs muscle strong. Also, gives you energy and produce less CO2. Food containing high proteins include eggs, meat, lentils, beans, protein supplement etc.
  • Good fat:Omega-3 fatty acids help to reduce inflammation and they also reduce the risk of lung infections. Finally, they can help to reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. Food containing Omega-3 fatty acids include: fish, Walnut.
  • Low Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates produce high amount of CO2 so recommended to restrict its intake.
  • Vitamins D: Vitamins D helps in boosting immune system responses and helps to reduce airway inflammation. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to increased risk of asthma attacks in children and adults. Food containing vitamin D include: fortified milk, salmon, orange juice and eggs.

Avoid Eating

  • Sugar: Sugar produces high amount of CO2 thus its consumption should be reduced in case of lungs disfunctioning
  • Sulfate: Sulfites hampers lungs functioning. Foods to avoid include: pickled food, shrimp, maraschino cherries, bottled lemon or lime juices and alcohol.
  • Foods that cause gas: Avoid foods that cause gas or bloating, it may make breathing more difficult. This may cause chest tightness and trigger asthma flare ups.
  • Foods to avoid include: Beans, Carbonated Drinks, Onions, Garlic and Fried Foods.
